Special restaurant terminals look serious on a brochure, yet many small counters already hold a charged phone or tablet that can open a browser. Billing means knowing the ticket total, choosing how the guest paid, and marking the order complete—not owning a beige box with a vendor logo. Hardware can follow after the workflow proves itself on a normal night.

This page is about the machine, not whether software belongs in the shop at all. That decision sits in Do Small Restaurants Really Need a POS System?. Here the question is narrower: can checkout run without buying a dedicated POS terminal first?

The device you already charge at the counter

Most shops keep one phone on charge near the till or let staff use phones already in their pockets. A PWA pinned to the home screen behaves like an app without a Play Store hunt for every new device. Large tap targets matter when hands are wet and the rush is loud.

Tables keep one open ticket; parcels stay on separate tickets with an optional reference so takeaway does not collide with dine-in. That split works on a phone screen as well as it would on a rented handheld. If two waiters share one tablet on a stand, the same rules still apply—clarity comes from tickets, not from owning branded metal.

Checkout without a special terminal

At checkout, the bill can show a GST breakup when the restaurant charges tax. Payment mode is recorded as UPI, cash, card, or other, and staff mark the order paid. Showing a UPI QR helps the guest pay; it does not confirm that money arrived—staff still close the ticket after they see the transfer or cash.

No payment gateway sits between you and the guest. No diner QR menu replaces the waiter. The counter phone is enough for that loop, including a quick glance at whether lunch cash and evening UPI were both logged.

Buy a printer later, not first

Printers feel like proof of "going digital," yet they do not fix mixed parcels or forgotten add-ons. Print once the team trusts the screen and guests ask for paper. Until then, a spoken total or a share of the bill text may cover the night without a roll of thermal paper under the counter.

Start billing on the screen that already lives at the till; buy metal only when paper or speed truly demands it.

Team SpoonCub

Summary for today's collection still lands on the same phone. Owners see the till without a second machine humming under the counter. When volume grows and you want a fixed station, you can still add a tablet stand or printer—without pretending the first step required a POS machine bundle.
